MORE than 1,800 people took to the streets of Barnsley last weekend to take part in the second annual Barnsley 10k.

Despite the intense heat on the day, the event still proved to be bigger and better than last year’s inaugural event.

The day was a fundraising success as well, with Barnsley Hospice receiving over £11,000 in donations alone.

A variety of faces took part, including professional boxer Jake Cleary and professional cyclist Jenson Young - who finished second.

Local boxer Callum Simpson, who recently won a European title at Oakwell, was there as well - not to run, but to cheer on his dad Donny.

Ryan Hinchliffe, who dressed as a nurse alongside his eight friends, managed to raise over £3,000 for Barnsley Hospital’s neonatal unit - and even got to meet Callum on the day.

Two people in their 80s took part as well, including local basketball coach Bert Beaumont.

Plans are already in place for next year’s race, and Gareth Cooke, a member of the council’s sport and physical activity team, told the Chronicle that there is hopes to keep the race’s route in place for ten years.
