A speed indication device has been put up on a busy road weeks after a pedestrian was killed on the stretch.

The gadget which tells drivers how fast they are travelling is on Pogmoor Road near the junction with  West Road.

Danny Mahoney, 76, of Wade Street, was killed last month yards from where the device has been erected. But the council says that is a coincidence.

A council spokesman said mobile speed indicators were used around the borough for four week periods. The highways department selects locations in response to concerns raised by community representatives and they are used on 30mph and 40mph roads.

"The deployment of the SID on Pogmoor Road (near its junction with West Road) is part of that programme. It is not the first time that a SID has been sited there, and this is coincidental with the fatal accident involving a pedestrian that occurred in March."

"We are pleased to see it, every little helps. People have commented about it because rather than something people read about it gives visual awareness."
