TWO tug of war teams from Barnsley are set to take part in national championships later this year.

Penistone Young Farmers and the Kilroe Tug of War (TOW) team are both set to take part after successful runs of results.

The former will compete in the National Young Farmers finals, after progressing through a number of qualifying rounds.

Becky Jackson, secretary at Kilroe, said: “The lads had to fight it out in what was quite a big region of teams, they pipped it though, even though the ground wasn’t in their favour.”

Kilroe recently won gold at the English National Championships in Kent, allowing them to take part in both the British and Irish TOW Championships and the World TOW Championships.

Kilroe’s team is made up of members of the Penistone side, along with two other players from Cawthorne and Lincolnshire.

They will represent England in the junior men and under-23 categories at both tournaments.

Becky added: “I’m massively proud of the effort, both of my lads are part of it so as a mum I’m super proud as well.

“The team are all great friends so when they train as a group they all really support each other.

“Andrew Howe, their coach, needs credit as well.”
