A LOCAL MP has vowed to continue supporting former pit workers who are calling for ‘justice’ over their pension scheme.

Following years of campaigning, Labour delivered justice on the Mineworkers’ Pension Scheme (MPS) last year by returning the £1bn investment reserve fund to members.

Eligible ex-miners received an immediate uplift to their pensions, with increased payments worth an average of £29 a week.

However changes to the British Coal Staff Superannuation Scheme (BCSSS), which is about two-thirds smaller than the MPS with its estimated 41,000 members, are still in the pipeline.

Stephanie Peacock, the MP for Barnsley South, recently met with the Wombwell-based Coalfields Regeneration Trust and trustees of the BCSSS in Parliament.

She said: “I was pleased to meet with the Coalfields Regeneration Trust and the BCSSS in Parliament recently.

“We are really proud to have the Coalfields Regeneration Trust in Wombwell, and I have been pleased to visit them on a number of occasions.

“They do excellent work for coalfield areas like Barnsley.
