MAYA Schofield, from Royston, took bronze over 800m in the English Schools Championships this week.
The 15-year-old was competing at the Alexandra Stadium in Birmingham against the best runners from around the country.
She won her heat then set a personal best in the final of 2-09.3, finishing just over a second behind the winner.
Maya said: “I am really happy to win bronze as a first year intermediate girl under 17, competing against the fastest girls in the country.
“However, I now know there’s a lot more to come”
Intermediate girls Amelie Spicer, Olwen Isherwood and Graihagh Turner also competed over 200m, 80m hurdles and 1,500m respectively, while Matthew Cockings ran in the senior boys’ 100m.
Amelie set a 200m PB of 25.65
Emily Richardson competed in the senior girls’ 200m.
Penistone Footpath Runners’ juniors produced two outstanding team performances at the Sheffield Relays.
In the 4x1km mixed relay, the quartet of Flynn Rogers, Edward Holley, Ben Thorogood and Finn Pepper were 18th overall and second in the mixed category with a combined time of 13-15.
Later in the evening, the same team returned for the ‘Descent of Doom’, a fast and technical downhill relay event.
They placed 13th overall and first in the mixed category, clocking 16-32.
At the second Spencer’s Dash of the year, Penistone’s James Mumford won in a time of 21-36.
Oliver France took third place overall and second in the senior men’s category with a time of 22-32.
The club’s top female performer was Suzanne McGill, who crossed the line in 25-58 to finish 24th overall and take first place in the women’s over45 category.
Notable age-category placings came from Ian Neville (18th overall, second over55 man), Loida Lopez (49th, third over50 woman), and Susan Hall (98th, third over60 woman).
In the men’s over65 category, Penistone had three top-ten finishers, with Stuart Woodhead, Stu Smith, and Keith Gordon fourth, fifth and sixth respectively.
Andrew Taylor completed the club’s line-up, finishing in 99th place.
The first Barnsley AC runner back was Lennon Hughes in 22-34. Vicky Shaw was first woman overall with 24-58.
Helen Morgan and Gail Colville finished as first and second over55 women in times of 25-25 and 26-10 respectively. Chris McNicholas was first over60 man with 25-14 while Beth Massey’s time of 27-29 saw her finish as second over60 woman. Gemma Thickett set a course PB of 27-38.
Barnsley Harrier Fiona Davies was second woman overall and first over50 woman. Paula Mills was third over55 woman.
At the Big Stone Fell Race in Chinley, Derbyshire, two Penistone runners took on the tough 6.6km course with 260m of climbing.
Damian Kilpin finished 16th overall and first in the men’s over45 category with a time of 39-10.
He was joined by Steve Storey, who finished in 52nd and was second over65 man in 47-28.
At the Penistone Footpath Runners’ annual summer handicap race, there was a victory for the pairing of Sarah Jones-Morris and Rachael Mayston.
Three Penistone runners were in action at the Ilkley Half Marathon.
Jade Crosby led the way for the club’s women, finishing in 1-37-34 to finish as 12th woman overall out of 263.
Nichola McNally finished third in the women’s over50 category with a time of 1-39-38. Barnsley Harrier Rich Spooner finished in 1-22.25 and was fourth over40 man.
Barnsley AC won match three of the Northern Track League Division East Two with 411 points, beating Chesterfield and District AC by three points.
With one match left they are in fourth place with 16 points, just one point behind the second promotion place.
There were PBs on the track for Joe Cox (1500m, 4-47.3), Tony Richards-Vardy (200m, 34.0), Georgia Smith (200m, 28.1), Helen Morgan (800m, 2-46.3; 1500m, 5-43.8; 3000m, 11-56.3) and Vicky Shaw (1500m, 5-32.2; 3000m, 11-26.3). In the field events there were PBs for Christopher Ryder in discus (16.87m) and Tony Richards-Vardy in javelin (14.15).
At the Wilmslow 10k in Cheshire, Barnsley AC’s Lee Yoxall took nearly a minute off his PB and went under 40 minutes for the first time with 39-49.
Barnsley AC’s Beth Massey was third woman at Towneley 10k in Burnley.
Her time was 44-15.
Barnsley Harriers held their annual Club Mile at the Dorothy Hyman Stadium. Adam Chambers crossed the line in 4-57 with Rich Spooner just behind him. Katie Roberts was the first woman in 6-34 with Jess Manley just behind her in 6-44.
