A LITERARY hero from Barnsley has announced his latest endeavour - by becoming a patron of a local arts charity.

Ian McMillan, an acclaimed writer and broadcaster from Darfield, has entered a new partnership with Creative Recovery.

He was officially unveiled as a partner on Monday, at an event attended by Mayor of Barnsley Dave Leech.

Ian has been a long-time supporter of Creative Recovery’s work, and has also previously advocated for more creative opportunities in Barnsley.

He said: “Creative Recovery are a wonderful utopian organisation, that says we can be hopeful about people, and that they can create things, and everyone can be an artist, and by that they can improve the wellbeing of themselves and the town.

“As a patron I can turn up to things, take part in things and hold workshops, but I can also say to people that they can do it, as I’ve lived in Barnsley as an artist for around 40 years.

“The more we can publicise Creative Recovery the better, because the first step for people through the door is the hardest, so if we can say that they will be welcomed, more people will turn up.”

The charity are hoping they can create ‘wonderful things’ in the future with Ian, who has presented on BBC Radio since 2002 and written a number of books.

At Monday’s unveiling, Coun Leech expressed his gratitude of welcoming Ian, and championed the work he could bring.

He added: “Ian’s words have long given voice to the spirit and story of this community, we’re truly grateful that he has chosen to lend his creativity and passion to Creative Recovery.

“His presence will not only be a source of inspiration, but a tremendous asset to the charity, I have no doubt that your imagination and commitment will help lift the charity to an even greater height.”
