A POLICE dog that played a vital role in the disorder at Manvers has been named the force’s animal of the year.

General purpose dog PD Luna is a nine-year-old Dutch herder, who was purchased from Northamptonshire Police in 2020 and has been an integral part of the local dog section since.

Luna was paired with her handler and having flown through their initial course, the duo hit the streets and never looked back.

During the past year, Luna assisted in arresting 33 people for offences, including violent and serious crime and played a vital role in the disorder at Manvers.

PD Luna’s handler said: “I am so incredibly proud of Luna, and pleased her work has been recognised with this award.

“She has been by my side for the past five years and has been the most loyal partner I could have asked for.

“She is a great police dog and loves her job.

“Even as she approaches the end of her career, and is set to retire this summer, she has showed no signs of slowing down, but after all her efforts, she deserves her retirement, and living her older years as a spoiled dog.
