THE last time Barnsley came up against Fleetwood Town in the cup at Oakwell they ended up winning the competition and were promoted from League One.

That game was almost a decade ago as the Reds - then under the stewardship of Lee Johnson - drew 1-1 with The Cod Army before winning the second leg on penalties.

One man who remembers that game perhaps more than most is current Blackpool striker Ashley Fletcher.

He came off the bench in the 68th minute to make his professional debut - and scored an equaliser just five minutes later.

Fletcher, now 29, told the Chronicle: "I remember it well.

"As a footballer you don't forget your professional debut.

"It couldn't have gone much better.

"I signed on the Wednesday and I only had one or two sessions and Lee stuck me on the bench.

"I came on with about 20 minutes to go when we were 1-0 down and managed to get the equaliser."

But there were no nerves for the youngster despite the occasion in front of a packed-out Oakwell.

"When I think back it was more excitement because it's what you work your whole life towards," he said.

"I had my family in the crowd and it was a really exciting moment as opposed to nerves.

"It couldn't have gone much better.

"I remember it really fondly.

"I'd come from Manchester United and no one had really heard of me.

"The opportunity to come to Barnsley came really quickly.

"I played for United's u21s on the Monday night and then the next morning I was in the car over to Oakwell."

It turned out to be a miraculous season for both Barnsley and Fletcher.

The Reds were in the relegation zone during the Christmas period and went onto win the Johnstone's Paint Trophy against Oxford United and the play-off final against Millwall.

Fletcher added: "I owe the club a lot.

"I genuinely think that without that loan my career might have gone a different way.

"For me it gave me a real base and platform to go and do well in the game and have a good career.

"That season was so memorable.

"Me and Josh Brownhill came at the same time and we were 17th or 18th in the league.

"At the time it was just trying to get ourselves away from the relegation spots.

"I don't think anyone foresaw where we would get to.

"We just had an unbelievable momentum and snuck in on the last day."

The Keighley-born striker scored in both games at Wembley - but he says the play-off final goal was his favourite.

"Two minutes in - you couldn't ask for a better start to a game," he said.

"It settled us in to the game.

"Going into that game I wasn't nervous at all - I was really, really excited.

"I was nervous the first time playing against Oxford but the Millwall game I was going in full of confidence.

"It was one of those games where the pressure was off us because we'd snuck in.

"It was an unbelievable day."

The majority of the side that started the game against Plymouth have gone onto have careers further up the footballing pyramid - and it's no surprise to Fletcher that was the case.

"Everyone at that team either stayed at Barnsley and became a legend or went onto play higher and got good moves," he said.

"So I think that just shows how well we did that season.

WHAT HAPPENED TO THAT SIDE?

Adam Davies

The Welsh shot-stopper left the Reds in 2019 to sign for Stoke City after making 209 appearances for the Reds.

He played just 41 times for the Potters during a three-year spell in the Championship before joining Sheffield United in 2022.

Now 33, Davies is still at the Blades but has played just ten games for Barnsley's Yorkshire rivals.

Reece Wabara

The full-back left the Reds in January 2016 - just weeks after this game.

He signed for eventual champions Wigan Athletic meaning he won promotion medals for two League One teams in the same season.

The former England youth international went onto sign for Bolton Wanderers before leaving football to focus on his business career.

He was ranked 19th on the 2023 Sunday Times Young Rich List with a net worth of £83million.

Ironically, this makes him wealthier than every active Premier League footballer, a career he retired from at the tender age of 26.

Kevin Long

The centre-back had already been around the block before signing for the Reds on loan from Burnley.

After leaving the Reds he went on loan again to MK Dons before signing permanently for Birmingham City in 2023.

He is currently plying his trade for Toronto FC in the MLS.

Alfie Mawson

A stand-out player in the Barnsley team, Mawson was always destined for big things.

He left in the summer of 2016 to sign for Premier League Swansea City and played 65 times in the top flight, scoring six goals over a two-year period.

He then signed for Premier League Fulham in 2018 before going out on loan to Bristol City in the Championship.

He re-signed for Wycombe in 2022 but retired a year later due to injury.

Aidy White

Born in Otley, the Irish full-back made his name for Leeds United before signing for the Reds first on loan, and then on a permanent basis.

He left Barnsley in 2017 and spent two years out of the sport due to injury before signing for Scottish Premiership club Hearts.

In 2021 he signed a two-year contract with Rochdale and retired from football in November 2023.

Lloyd Isgrove

The speedy winger scored just one goal for the Reds this season - and it was in the play-off final against Millwall.

He was certainly a fan favourite but after a loan spell at Portsmouth he signed for Swindon Town on a permanent basis in 2019.

He then signed for Bolton Wandered before he joined Southern Football League Premier Division South club Sholing in 2023.

Isgrove now plays his football in Australia for Hume City.

Conor Hourihane

There's no need for an introduction for this man as he is now the head coach at Oakwell.

After leaving the Reds he signed for Aston Villa before being loaned out to Swansea City and Sheffield United

He joined Derby County in 2022 and re-signed as a club legend at Barnsley last year before retiring in December.

Brad Abbott

Abbott was starting his footballing career during this season and has had a good career in non-league since.

After spells at Harrogate Town, Chester and Barrow he eventually singed for Buxton.

He's gone onto play for teams such as Boston, Spennymoor and Matlock and he now plies his trade with Cleethorpes Town.

Adam Hammill

The winger is a player who would get into most Barnsley fans' 'all time 11s'.

He is a true legend of the club and worked wonders during his two spells here.

After the Reds were relegated in 2018 he signed for St Mirren and then Scunthorpe United.

He then played for Derry City, Prescot Cables and Maghull.

Ryan Williams

The Australian midfielder had an injury-ridden spell at Oakwell and left the club in 2017 to sign for Rotherham United.

He then went onto sign for Portsmouth and Oxford before returning to his home city of Perth.

Williams then moved to India to play for Bengaluru.

Sam Winnall

Winnall's not a name that's taken to too kindly around Oakwell these days - but there's no doubting how good he was for the Reds.

He signed for South Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday in 2017 before signing for Oxford in 2020 after a loan spell at Derby County.

He went onto play one more season in 2022 for Burton Albion before retiring from football.
