BARNSLEY won't be able to score three goals every weekend - but it doesn't matter just yet as the Reds made it two wins from two thanks to a fantastic comeback against Burton Albion.

David McGoldrick was the man of the moment after firing past Jordan Amissah in the 93rd minute to give the Reds all three points.

But it started poorly for both McGoldrick and Barnsley after referee David Rock judged that the 37-year-old had brought down Brewers midfielder JJ McKiernan in the box.

Jake Beesley made no mistake from the spot as he calmly placed the ball past a static Murphy Cooper.

Fabio Tavares doubled Burton’s lead on 35 minutes after he latched onto a McKiernan through ball.

This was the first time there had been any sport at Oakwell since Barnsley boxer Callum Simpson was crowned the European super-middleweight champion on June 8.

He paraded around the ground with the belts at half-time – and the Reds certainly came out in the second half with some fighting spirit.

Caylan Vickers pulled one back on 55 minutes thanks to a looping effort which found the top corner.

Davis Keillor-Dunn levelled on 63 minutes, firing home from inside the area after Luca Connell’s effort was parried straight to him Amissah in the Burton goal.

And McGoldrick made up for his error in the opening minutes to send the Barnsley faithful delirious after turning in an Adam Phillips cross at the back post in added time.

The result leaves the Reds second in the early League One table.

Defensive woes made up for by attacking brilliance

The two full backs who started the opening day victory against Plymouth Argyle last weekend - Mael de Gevigney and Josh Earl - moved into the centre of defence for this game.

Jack Shepherd missed out through suspension while Marc Roberts is set to miss the next two months due to injury.

Head coach Conor Hourihane has said previously that he sees the Frenchman as a right-back but was forced to move him inside for this game, making room for midfielder Jonathan Bland on the right.

The Reds announced the signing of Tannai Watson last week and it's likely that a centre-back will need to follow in his footsteps.

Barnsley looked poor at the back, with Burton playing long balls over the top and beating the Reds' defence on far too many occasions.

Sloppy passes and poor tracking left the Reds 2-0 down at half-time.

But thankfully there's clearly goals in this team.

New boy Vickers scored on his Oakwell debut, while Keillor-Dunn did what he does best and scored yet another goal.

And whatever Hourihane said at half-time clearly worked as Barnsley grabbed the winner in the 93rd minute thanks to a McGoldrick strike.

It's the second time in as many games that the Reds have scored three goals - but they can't keep that up.

They need to be better defensively.

If they're not, they will soon run into real trouble.

Fans get behind players

Hourihane had pleaded with the Reds' faithful to get behind the team from minute one.

And they did that.

The wonderful new flag, depicting Billy Casper from Ken, looked fantastic as it went across the Ponty End.

They were chanting for the Reds, and Hourihane, from minute one.

It's just a shame that in minute two Burton were given a penalty.

When Burton scored their second the atmosphere dropped, but the Reds ensured the fans still had something to cheer about, coming on strong before half-time.

And the fans needed no invitation to be loud in the second half thanks to the fantastic turnaround.

Oakwell has been a miserable place for the Reds in recent years.

It's left fans dreading playing at home - but it might just be about to change.

The Ponty End was sold out - and there's clearly some hope among the fanbase.

Long may it continue.

Late goal shows difference from last season

The first half performance was reminiscent of something fans would have watched last season.

It was sloppy from minute one and the Reds struggled to get into the game.

But, unlike they managed to last season, they were strong until the final seconds.

They'd have lost that match last season, probably by three or four goals.

But this time they came back and won it.

It's impressive.

Whatever Hourihane has done in pre-season has clearly worked.

They look fitter and stronger and more resilient.

It's an exciting time - but the Reds can't get too ahead of themselves.

However if they can keep this up, the team are showing signs of performing towards the top end of the league this season.

McGoldrick showing age is just a number

At 37 years old McGoldrick is obviously one of the older heads in the squad.

Some fans had expressed some concerns over that factor but he certainly looks the real deal in this Barnsley side.

He has 180 career goals in more than 600 games, including 77 in the Championship and 47 at League One level in 94 games.

He scored his first at Oakwell on Saturday and made up for giving away a penalty in the second minute of the game.

McGoldrick said after the match that goals are starting to mean more to him now - and I'm sure he'll get plenty in a Barnsley shirt.

He was only substituted in the 95th minute - after scoring the winner - and worked his socks off from the first minute.

He's looking to be a real stout signing for Conor Hourihane, and he's quickly becoming a fan favourite.
