AT just ten years old, Harley Stringer is showing that you’re never too young to make a real difference.
A pupil at Mapplewell Primary School and a dedicated member of The Box Gym’s teen fitness class, Harley has raised hundreds of pounds for Barnsley Hospital Charity.
Inspired by both his school and the gym, Harley organised and led a Hyrox-style fitness event at the gym, with over 40 children and adults taking part. Hyrox is a challenging but inclusive multi-discipline event that combines running with strength and endurance-based exercises and is a true test of fitness and teamwork.
Harley’s drive to give back stemmed from a simple but powerful thought: ‘You never know when you will need it’.
His efforts which raised £562 were also fuelled by his involvement in Mapplewell Primary’s fundraising activities, including their Santa Saunter and a brave walk over Lego bricks - all in support of local hospital patients.
His passion didn’t stop there and Harley was inspired by other gym members who had taken on a 24-hour workout challenge raising over £3,000 for the charity.
Determined to do his bit, Harley worked closely with gym instructors to bring his idea to life and it didn’t go unnoticed.
Jane Mills, charity development manager at Barnsley Hospital Charity, said: “What Harley has done is nothing short of remarkable.
“To see someone so young pour their energy, passion, and kindness into helping others is truly heartwarming.
“Both Harley and his younger brother Max have touched the lives of our patients and inspired us all.
“Harley is more than a young fundraiser, he’s a shining light in the Barnsley community, using his strength, spirit and selflessness to make a lasting impact.
“He is truly deserving of recognition as a Proud of Barnsley Young Superstar.”
Indeed, Harley’s commitment even encouraged his younger brother Max, aged six, to set up his own mini fundraiser.
Too young to take part in the Hyrox event, Max created a challenge of his own completing 50 star jumps a day and raised an amazing £109.
Sapphire Goddard, co-owner of The Box Gym, added: “Seeing our members use their fitness for a greater cause is what it’s all about.
“It’s not just about getting stronger physically, it’s about building a stronger community.
“Harley’s efforts are a shining example of what can happen when young people lead with heart and purpose.”
Harley and Max’s mum, Caroline Stringer ,said: “Watching the boys take this on has been one of the proudest moments of our lives.
“They put their hearts into every step not just to raise money, but to make a real difference.
“Their compassion, determination, and teamwork have inspired us and we couldn’t be prouder.”
