MURPHY Cooper is confident Barnsley can get well into double figures for clean sheets this season.

The Reds had not stopped the opposition from scoring in 19 games before winning 1-0 at Peterborough on Tuesday. Speaking earlier in the week, the goalkeeper told the Chronicle: “There is a real emphasis in training on defending.

“With momentum, hopefully come the end of the season we might have ten or 15 clean sheets which will be good.”

Cooper joined from QPR for the season and has so far started every match in league and cup.

“It’s really good because I feel a lot of trust from the gaffer which helps me going onto the pitch.

“I would do anything for him to keep the ball out of the net.

“Playing every game is important because you get your pitch geography and keep improving.”

While Cooper has been a consistent presence this season, the defenders in front of him have changed regularly due to injury and suspension.

“No matter who is playing in the back four, midfield or attack, we have a good enough squad.

“Arguably everyone deserves to be playing and works hard to play.

“It doesn’t matter who’s playing, we all understand the philosophy and we’ll do our best to keep the ball out of the net and put the ball in their net.”

He made a vital injury-time save to secure a 1-1 draw at home to Bolton Wanderers on Saturday after an early red card.

“That’s what I am there for.

“The lads dug deep with ten men so I had to do what I could.

“I was grateful I tipped it around the post and it stayed out.”

Cooper had saved two penalties in the previous match, at home to Fleetwood in the EFL Cup.

“Scott (Flinders) the goalie coach and the analysts, they dug penalties out of here, there and everywhere for every player and wrote them down for me.

“I just had to go the right way and save them. A lot of work goes into it which I am grateful for.”
