Barnsley host Rotherham United in an EFL Cup second round tie from 7.45pm on Tuesday.
The Reds were five unbeaten at the start of the season but then lost to AFC Wimbledon on Saturday.
They made it through the first round on penalties against League Two Fleetwood Town while the Millers also required a shoot-out against fourth tier Salford after a 0-0 draw.
Rotherham won their opening game of the season 2-1 at home to Port Vale but lost 1-0 at Stevenage and then 3-0 at Cardiff City.
They then drew 2-2 at home to Wigan on Saturday, conceding a late leveller.
The Millers have a terrible record against Barnsley, losing the last six matches while scoring just once – through ex-Red Michael Smith in a 2-1 home loss in December 2020.
Rotherham have not won in 13 meetings with the Reds since 1982 while their last victory at Oakwell was in the League Cup in 1970, after which they have visited 15 times without winning.
The Millers signed midfielder Josh Benson this summer after his release by Barnsley but he is currently out with an ankle injury.
Dale Tonge, who won promotion as a player and coach at hometown club Barnsley, is assistant manager at Rotherham to Matt Hamshaw.
If they get to the third round, the Reds will replicate last season when they beat Wigan and Sheffield United to set up a trip to Manchester United where they lost 7-0.
