A deal by deal look at Barnsley's ins and outs during the EFL summer transfer window which closed on Monday.
INCOMINGS
MURPHY COOPER
The first signing of the summer and one of the most impressive so far. After using five different goalkeepers last season, Hourihane wanted an established number one and brought in the QPR loanee who had kept 16 clean sheets for Stevenage last season while Barnsley kept just six. He has made some excellent saves in most of the games so far.
NATHANAEL OGBETA
The left-back signed on loan from fellow League One club Plymouth after a tough year during their relegation from the Championship. He moved to Oakwell in the same week as he got married, and has made a decent start to life as a Red.
He has been a threat in attack, either bombing forward on the left wing and crossing well, or ‘inverting’ into midfield and playing clever passes.
Defensively he has been slightly less convincing, including a bad error for Huddersfield’s consolation goal on Saturday.
REYES CLEARY
The 21-year-old winger signed on a three-year deal, with the Reds having an option of another year until 2029, on a free transfer after turning down a new contract with West Bromwich Albion. Building on an impressive loan with National League Hartlepool, he caught the eye off the bench on his debut against Burton Albion then was excellent as he started against Fleetwood in the EFL Cup days later.
But he has just played 39 league minutes off the bench and Hourihane has said he is a raw talent who needs to work on his fitness. He impressed for the under 21s this week.
CAYLAN VICKERS
Probably the pick of the signings, the Brighton loanee has been excellent on the right wing so far.
He has started all eight matches in league and cup, already matching his two goals from his loan spell at Mansfield last season. He adds superb dribbling, energy and clever passing.
DAVID MCGOLDRICK
The 37-year-old was an opinion-splitting signing when he joined on a one-year deal in July, with some questioning his age and others valuing his experience, character and goals record including 17 with Notts County in League Two last season.
He won sceptics over with a last-minute winner against Burton on his home debut then scored again in the next game at Oakwell against Bolton. He has missed golden chances in each of the last four league games, having taken a heavy touch when put clean through against Huddersfield on Saturday.
The fear is that McGoldrick will be flogged and exhausted by the lack of depth up front.
PATRICK KELLY
The 20-year-old midfielder was seen a coup signing within the club when he joined on a four-year deal from West Ham for free. The Northern Irish youth international appears to have serious potential, with his passing and dribbling ability.
But Jono Bland has been picked ahead of him this week as a more defensively disciplined player. Kelly has made three starts and five substitute appearances.
The Chronicle understands that Barnsley did not pay any money, including compensation, for either him or Cleary but their previous clubs have sell-on clauses.
TENNAI WATSON
Barnsley were in desperate need of a right-back when they brought in Watson on a one-year deal a week into the season.
The 28-year-old had been training with the Professional Footballers’ Association after playing for Charlton in May’s play-off final win then being released.
He does not seem to be a particularly attacking right-back but he has been defensively solid so far as he catches up in terms of fitness having not had a pre-season.
JAKE ROONEY
There had been three and a half weeks without a signing until deadline day when the 22-year-old defender joined on loan from Derby County for the season.
Rooney, who is highly-rated but has battled injury, adds depth and balance to the defensive unit. He played with both Conor Hourihane and David McGoldrick for the Rams.
OUTGOINGS
ALL THE RIGHT WING-BACKS
Conor Hourihane has changed from the 3-5-2 formation to a back four, so all three of the right wing-backs from last season have been moved on.
Barry Cotter and Corey O’Keeffe are on loan at Notts County and Stockport County respectively for the season while Kyran Lofthouse was sold to Burton Albion following last season’s loan.
Cotter has been playing regularly in League Two and is out of contract with the Reds at the end of the season while O’Keeffe – who is under contract until 2027 at Oakwell – has also been a consistent starter with League One Stockport.
Lofthouse has been an ever-present in the league for Burton, including in a loss at Oakwell.
MAX WATTERS
The striker, who could never perform consistently well for the Reds, joined Dundee United on loan for the season in July and has already scored four goals.
He netted three goals in two games against Rapid Vienna in Europa Conference League qualifying, but has now suffered the kind of injury which hindered his Barnsley career.
Barnsley will still have an option next summer to keep him for a further year.
KACPER LOPATA
The centre-back was clearly not in Hourihane’s plans all summer then was eventually loaned out to League Two Bristol Rovers for the season. He has reunited with former Reds boss Darrell Clarke who let him go out to Ross County last season, when he was behind Marc Roberts and Donovan Pines.
Lopata, who grew up in Bristol after being born in Poland, has helped them to three straight clean sheets after a difficult start.
The 24-year-old is contracted at Barnsley until 2027.
ANDY DALLAS
The striker was sent out on loan by Barnsley for a fifth time, with Southend United becoming his eighth club in two and a half years. The 26-year-old played five times for the Reds after joining in the summer of 2023, scoring a diving header on his debut against Port Vale, but has since been sent to Kilmarnock, Oldham, Barrow and Morecambe – scoring ten goals in 86 games for them all combined.
He did not score in his first five games for Southend – one of the favourites in the National League this season – but got both goals on Saturday in a 2-1 win at Solihull.
He is out of contract at the end of the season.
BAYLEY MCCANN
The young left-back has been loaned out to National League North club Peterborough Sports. He scored a superb free-kick in their first win of the season at Marine on Saturday. Peterborough Sports, co-managed by Reds legend Luke Steele, also have former Barnsley youngsters Josiah Dyer and Charlie Hickingbottom.
Goalkeeper Rogan Ravenhill has been loaned out to National League North Leamington and was Player of the Match at the weekend while Ziggy Kozluk has joined Brighouse Town in the Northern Premier League on loan.
