BARNSLEY Ladies’ new senior side are due to begin their season in the Sheffield and Hallamshire League this weekend.

The club’s previous senior team was incorporated into the Barnsley FC umbrella in 2023 and reached the fourth tier but they folded earlier this summer. Barnsley FC closed the women’s team down after they were informed by the FA that they could not play games on the pitches at the back of Oakwell and would either have to play on the main pitch or at a different stadium. They took the decision to withdraw the team from the league.

Barnsley Ladies junior club, with whom the previous team was based before being taken over by the Reds, have started a new senior side which will train and play at Oakwell.

Their first game is away at Staveley MW reserves on Sunday in Division Two of the Sheffield and Hallamshire League – the eighth tier in England.

Dearne and District are due to host Edenthorpe while Penistone Church host SJR Worksop reserves.

Wombwell Town are set to visit Barlborough in Division Four.
