WHEN she decided she wanted to have a baby Sonja I’Anson lost seven-and-a-half stone to make her dream come true.
And her remarkable weight loss started her on a journey that has seen her help hundreds of local people across Barnsley.
“After I lost all that weight and had my baby I decided I wanted to help others and because a Slimming World consultant,” said Sonja.
And her dedication and support since then has led to her being nominated in the Community Hero category in this year’s Proud of Barnsley awards.

“Over the past eight years, Sonja has been a driving force in helping hundreds of people in our community transform their lives through healthy weight loss, fitness education, and unwavering emotional support.
“Her mission has always been clear: to empower people to live healthier, happier lives - and she has succeeded with extraordinary compassion and professionalism.
“What sets Sonja apart is not only the measurable results her clients achieve, but the way she delivers her service.
“She goes well beyond expectations by offering personalised support, creating safe and inclusive spaces for people of all backgrounds and body types, and being available whenever her clients need encouragement or guidance.
“Whether it’s through group support or simply checking in on someone struggling, Sonja does it all with warmth, empathy, and dedication.”
Sonja’s excellence has not gone unnoticed and she has received multiple awards for the exceptional quality of her service, reflecting both the results her clients achieve and the deep respect she earns from everyone she supports.
“These accolades are a testament to her skill, but it is her heart and community spirit that truly make her a hero,” Sara’s nomination added.
“In a time when many struggle with their health and confidence, Sonja is a beacon of hope and strength.
“Her work has changed lives - and in many cases, saved them.
“I can think of no one more deserving of this recognition.

Sonja, who holds her slimming sessions at Shaw Lane Sports Club and is also an area manager, was delighted by the nomination: “That’s so lovely. It’s really made my day and made me cry. Even if I don’t get to the finals this is amazing.”
