CLAIRE Fisher’s passion for supporting young people with special educational needs has bagged her a Proud of Barnsley nomination.
In 2023, Claire created True Colours, with the mission of creating a safe space for SEN children and their families to have fun and socialise.
True Colours is based at Worsbrough Common Community Centre and meets on Thursdays from 5.30pm until 7pm.
They accommodate children aged five to 13, who must be accompanied by a parent or carer.
The group offers an array of sensory and play experiences, including arts and crafts, toys and games, as well as trips.
Claire was inspired to launch the group after facing judgement from the public with her son, who has ADHD, autism and is partially deaf.
Claire’s son, who is now a teenager, received constant misconceptions and judgement about his behaviour in places meant for children - causing her to avoid going altogether briefly.
This resulted in the development of True Colours, where Claire hopes to offer acceptance for children and families who share similar difficulties.
No week at True Colours is the same, with new themes, activities and experiences available for attendees.
The group has had its fair share of success stories, Claire said: “We’ve got children whose communication skills have gone up.
“We were blowing bubbles and I was saying ‘pop’, a non-verbal child was copying me and his mum was in tears.
“We have animal sessions, so kids that are scared of animals have come out of their shell and have actually stroked or held animals.
“We do a lot of taste-safe sensory experiences, where kids with sensory issues will touch things.”
The group often fundraise to make outings possible, alongside buying equipment, with the community rallying around them.
Claire added: “With all of the activities, we try to get them out in the community and have group sessions.
“So many people have come out and supported us, helped us with activities and offered advice.
“I’d like to say a massive thank you to the people who have supported us, without them we couldn’t do what we do.”
