THE Prospect Tavern’s incredible commitment to raising six figures for charity has earned them a Proud of Barnsley nomination.

The pub, based in Hoyland, is run by Melvyn and Lynn Sims who have amassed over £100,000 for various charities across their 25-year tenure.

Previously, they have fundraised for the likes of The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association, Dementia UK, Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice and many more.

Most recently, they embarked on an ambitious series of fundraising events in aid of Prostate Cancer UK.

On June 21, a group of 26 volunteers went on a 15-mile sponsored walk from Robin Hood’s Bay to Scarborough.

The group had two cars filled with other volunteers following them, providing food, water, first aid kits and clean clothing.

The cause is close to Melvyn and Lynn’s hearts, with their brother-in-law Allan battling prostate cancer.

Melvyn said: “When you look at a person who is ill, the people around them are suffering too.

“It opens you up and makes you realise you’ve got to help.

“As a community, the walk brought all the people together.”

The group undertook two more fundraising events for Prostate Cancer UK.

On August 16, the pub threw a garden party where a number of local music artists donated their talents.

On September 7, Melvyn and Lynn’s 25th wedding anniversary celebrations were transformed into a final fundraising push. A local artist played the event whilst raffle tickets were sold to win a range of exciting prizes.

Lucky winners bagged prizes from vacuum cleaners, a meat platter worth £100, to a £250 cash prize.

Impressively, there have been no expenses paid out of the fundraising pot, with Melvyn admitting raffle tickets were the only thing they had to buy.

The prizes were all donated by local people and businesses, showing the huge community effort that went into curating the final prize fund.

Overall, their fundraising efforts amounted to a whopping £10,000.

Melvyn, alongside Ruby Cooper, Susan Osborne and Duane Nordon, presented the cheque to Stephen Halstead, a representative for Prostate Cancer UK.

Melvyn attributed the pub’s incredible fundraising feats to their local community, adding: “It’s a small pub with a big heart.

“I’d like to say a big thank you to Hoyland in general.

“Anybody who walked or donated.

“Even if you spent a pound, you still make a difference.”
