ALMOST £1m will be spent on modernising 35 bus stops.

The Barnsley to Shafton route will benefit from South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority cash which will allow all stops on the A628 corridor to have real-time information technology for waiting passengers.

A report said: “The objectives are to increase bus patronage and increase passenger comfort and satisfaction.

“If the scheme does not proceed, the local area will continue to suffer from an absence of adequate information on the bus services in the corridor and continue to support a high private car mode share and contribute to continued congestion in the area.

“This issue will also be exacerbated as future development of housing and employment allocation sites contribute to background growth in travel demand.

“The corridors serves a number of areas that have higher levels of deprivation and are impacted disproportionately by ineffective travel options.”
