DAVIS Keillor-Dunn is looking to better last season’s 19-goal tally following a transfer window which was ‘doing my head in.’
The forward was Player of the Year last season and has followed that up with five goals already, mainly up front. Keillor-Dunn told the Chronicle: “The false nine, where I’m playing now, I’m dropping in but also getting into the box. It’s my job to score goals.
“I never want to stand still, I always want to beat my seasons prior.
“If I can go on and do better than last season, that’s the plan always.
“I have worked a lot on being in the right position for those inside the box.
“When I am not outside the box there won’t be as many goals outside the box.
“It’s more going to be poacher’s finishes and I am happy to do so. I just want to score big goals for the club.”
Barnsley are thought to have turned down multiple offers from other clubs for Keillor-Dunn in the transfer window, which he is now glad is shut.
“It was doing my head in. Everyone was messaging me. I try not to focus on stuff like that. Until I am told otherwise, I always say to the manager I will give 110 per cent for the club. I am here and my contract is this long.
“I just love being here and I am happy at the minute playing for the club.”
The Reds missed out on reinforcements for the forward positions in the final day, meaning head coach Conor Hourihane is trying to get more out of the likes of Neil Farrugia and Jon Russell who can play in multiple positions. Keillor-Dunn said: “It’s about versatility.
“Me and Didz (David McGoldrick) can swap and we have lads who can play in different roles. As long as everybody is confident and we’re all pulling in the same direction there’s no reason people can’t play different positions and do well.”
Hourihane has admitted Barnsley must stay lucky with injuries in attack but, since signing at the end of last year’s summer transfer window, Keillor-Dunn has started all 50 of Barnsley’s league games plus five cup matches. The only games he has missed are EFL Trophy ties and the EFL Cup game at Manchester United last season when he was cup-tied.
“I just want to be available every single week. That’s the biggest thing.
“I want to work hard so the manager can rely on me. I am proud of always being available for selection and hopefully I can keep doing that and make the manager’s job easier.”
Keillor-Dunn almost scored a spectacular goal from near the halfway line during the 6-0 loss to Brighton in the EFL Cup on Tuesday but it hit the bar.
“I will definitely try it again if it’s on, I look up and the ‘keeper is there, I back my ability to hit the target this time. It’s a chance at the end of the day, it gets the players up the pitch and gets the fans off their seats. So why not?”
He added: “That summed our night up, we got punished by everything we could have got punished with and we were unlucky with everything else.
“They had a really good night which is exactly what we didn’t need. I saw the goalkeeper on the floor and thought it had got a chance. In the end I didn’t even need to hit it that hard.”
Keillor-Dunn enjoyed testing himself against the likes of England international James Milner.
“A couple of lads were saying Milner was still shouting at his players at 6-0 after 90 minutes. The standards he sets for himself and his team, it shows just you where he’s got in his career.
“They are all things you can pick up.”
