COUNCILLORS in Old Town are working with Network Rail to open a footpath in Wilthorpe following the closure of a railway line crossing.
Earlier this year, the crossing was closed due to antisocial behaviour - with shocking footage showing youngsters dicing with death by going onto the tracks and playing with oncoming trains.
Coun Phil Lofts and Jo Newing are now working alongside the organisation in applying for a temporary diversion to a nearby footpath.
They told the Chronicle: “We were shocked and appalled at reports that individuals were crossing the railway line at the level crossing at Wilthorpe and supported Network Rail applying for a temporary diversion to the footpath in order to prevent unauthorised and dangerous access at this location.
“Fundamentally, it is about ensuring the safety of local people.
“In the longer-term, we want to see a solution that enables walkers to be able to safely access the beautiful green space we have on our doorstep in Wilthorpe.
“We would very much like to see a new and formalised public footpath in the area that can be safely and responsibly.”
Community campaigner Brandon Green added: “It is deeply concerning to see this kind of antisocial behaviour.
“What might seem like a bit of fun really does run the risk of serious injury, or worse.
“I fully support the campaign from local Labour councillors, Phillip and Jo, to provide a long-term solution for Wilthorpe walkers.”
