MAEL de Gevigney is ‘not really worried’ about being on Barnsley’s bench for most league games this season and is confident of breaking back into the team.
The French defender played every minute of 63 consecutive Reds games from late 2023 until February this year but had a tough end to last season with two red cards and some big mistakes which led to goals.
He started the first two league games of this season but, since then, his only league action was as an 89th-minute substitute against Huddersfield on August 30.
He has started three cup games and is on 97 appearances for the club.
De Gevigney told the Chronicle: “I don’t really want to talk about myself.
“The team has been doing well. I am working hard and I want to play. I am going to play. I am not really worried.
“I will keep doing what I am doing every day in training. I am not changing.
“I work hard every day and hopefully I will play more in the future.”
De Gevigney has often played at right-back this season under Conor Hourihane, having previously been a centre-back.
“I will play where the gaffer asks me. He knows I am a defensive-minded player but I can play right-back or centre-back. It’s not a problem for me.”
Barnsley have lost their last four games in all competitions and now visit Wycombe Wanderers ahead of a two-week international break.
De Gevigney said: “We’re still training well but the results are clearly not as good as we want and as good as we should have, because we are really good team. We have played some great football since the beginning of the season.
“We know we have to do better and we’re going to work for this.
“We had some expectations about the four games between the two international breaks. We didn’t do as well as we wanted so we have to finish well against Wycombe and move on to the break.”
Barnsley lost 2-1 at Notts County on Tuesday, with Jono Bland sent off early in the second half.
De Gevigney said: “It is frustrating to concede a last-minute goal, especially after working hard with ten men.
“We didn’t start the game as we normally start but we reacted well and played well. We started the second half with good intentions. The red card is a bit unlucky but Blandy will learn from that and it didn’t help us.
“It’s still the group stage and we still have two games in the Vertu Trophy.”
