A leisure centre closed for more than a year could be open within weeks after the lease was signed over to a community group.
Penistone Leisure Centre, which shut in May last year, was taken over by Sporting Penistone last Friday.
The group hopes to have individuals running exercise classes at the centre by August, before a grand reopening in September.
Martyn Housden, of Sporting Penistone, said a major clean up was needed and initial use would be limited.
“We’re at the start of a process rather than at the end of things,” said Martyn. “We need to get it clean and tidy and ready for use.
“The building has had a variety of damage – pipes have burst, plaster has come off the ceilings, water’s been spurting out of a radiator and coming in through the flat roof.”
Once open the centre will be funded by usage meaning facilities – such as the gym – will be unavailable until money is available to pay staff.
Rooms at the back of the building may be used as a boxing gym and by Woodhead Mountain Rescue to increase revenue.
