TRIBUTES have been paid to a respected former headteacher who died last week.

Bill Harris was the head at Worsbrough Common Primary School for 23 years from 1978 to 2001 and is well-respected across the entire community.

He was also a former player, committee member and youth team coach at Monk Bretton Cricket Club and still attended training sessions with his grandson.

He died at Barnsley Hospital last Tuesday, aged 80.

His son Matthew Harris, who followed in his dad’s footsteps and is currently the headteacher at Burton Road Primary School, told the Chronicle: “He was the headteacher at Worsbrough Common for 23 years and was widely respected.

“He was also a keen local cricketer and played for a number of clubs including Monk Bretton - he was on their quiz team.

“He was a big family man - he loved his holidays.

“He was a widower and leaves behind his two children and five grandchildren.”
