THE PROUD of Barnsley judges have completed their first task ahead of this year’s awards the unenviable task of drawing up the shortlist.

More than 500 nominations were received and we have tried to feature as many of the nomineees as possible in the pages of the Barnsley Chronicle.

With the spectacular presentation night at the Metrodome Arena now being four weeks away, we have chosen our finalists.

This week, our team have been busy filming the video stories of all the nominees which will be used in the judging process and shown on the big screens on the night.

Chronicle readers will then have a part to play in helping choose our winners thanks to an online vote which will go live on our website www.barnsleychronicle.com before the end of the month.

The results of this will be merged with the results of a judging panel who will meet on Friday, November 7 to reveal our winners.

Their identities will remain a closely-guarded secret until the Metrodome ceremony which, once again, will be hosted by local radio presenters Stephanie Hirst and Steve White.

As well as the 15 category winners, there will be three other awards the Mayor of Barnsley’s Community Recognition Award, the Milly Johnson Feelgood Award and the final award of the night the Sir Michael Parkinson Special Recognition Award whcih will be presented to someone who has made an outstanding contribution to our town.

Chronicle editor Andrew Harrod said: “Every year, we are always astounded by the dedication of the nominees and this year really is no exception.

“It is no exaggeration to say that we could easily have had a ten-strong shortlist in every category but the judges had the tough job of narrowing down the shortlists.

“In several categories, this was proving impossible so some categories have four on the shortlist.

“This is a real testimony to the calibre of all the nominations we received and it seemed the right thing to do, given the astonishing number of nominations

“We want to thank all the people who took the time to nominate their heroes. Without people doing this, there would be no Proud of Barnsley Awards.

“We’re confident that this year’s awards night will be the best we’ve ever staged. And on top of the awards, we also have a few surprises up our sleeves.”
