THERE was a Barnsley winner at the Worksop Half Marathon in Clumber Park.

Barnsley AC’s Gary Briscoe finished in 1-11-49 which was 42 seconds ahead of his nearest rival.

Teammate Vicky Shaw knocked more than two minutes off her PB to cross as second over35 female with 1-29-06.

Laura Mills completed in 2-24-49.

Penistone Footpath Runners duo Gareth Irvine and Alex Crosby also ran.

Irvine was 70th overall in a time of 1-29-00. It also ensured him tenth in mv45.

Crosby crossed in 1-35-48 for 146th.

Barnsley Harriers were also well represented at the race.

Dean Goodwin led home the Black and Tan. Father and son team Shaun and Ricky Curtis, ran their first half for the club. There were huge PBs for Jay West (16 minutes), Craig Parker (11 minutes), and Claire Clarke (10 minutes).

Following a PB at a parkrun last weekend breaking the 20 minute mark, Barnsley Harrier Jon Barker ran his first half marathon for the club. Jon finished the Macclesfield Half Marathon finishing 9th MV40.

Penistone’s Bill Phillips made a return after a year’s break from racing, finishing in 2-00-02, just two seconds outside his target.

Thursday evening saw the third round of Penistone’s Philip Senior Winter Handicap, with 27 runners tackling the hilly 4.5-mile course from Penistone Leisure Centre via Rockside Hill and the Windmills.

Chris Hodgson claimed victory, finishing first on handicap in 33-41 six minutes and nineteen seconds faster than predicted ahead of Steve Dommett (52-08) and Irvine (31-31).

Ben Wilkinson (39-39), Claire Watts (50-51), Daniel Limb (32-18) and Mandy Mallinder (42-20) also beat their predicted times, while Fay Nicholls (38-55) and Jemma Williams (35-53) maintained their consistent form.

Kim Rogers (51-20) finished exactly on her handicap.

Ian Neville now leads the WMA League on 75 points from Julian Williams (63) and George Parr (59).

There was further success on the fells where Damian Kilpin represented Penistone at the Lockton Limping Fell Race in the North York Moors.

The event formed the final round of the Esk Valley Fell Club Summer Series, a long-running championship of classic North Yorkshire fell races.

Kilpin’s strong and consistent performances earned him fifth place overall in the standings.

Further north, Mark Crossley and Jon Hallam completed the demanding two-day Original Mountain Marathon in the Lake District, placing 30th of 138 teams in the Linear B class over a rugged mountain route.

Barnsley AC’s Jodie Thompson ran the Valencia half marathon in a time of 2-33-32 which was a PB by around half an hour.

Teammate Kenny Hunter ran the Haltemprice 10k in East Yorkshire and was first over55 male with 41-07.

Gail Colville was third female at Circuito de Carreras Populares Diputación de Almería in Pulpí in a time of 29-27, 33 seconds faster than she posted last year.

Silvers were won for Barnsley AC’s Ruby Sunman and Archie Bisht at the South Yorkshire Cross Country League fixture at Longley Park in Sheffield.

Barnsley Harrier Jo Taylor was the first back for the ladies in 93rd place, while first back for the men was Richard Spooner crossing the line in 41st place overall.

Barnsley AC also hosted their parkrun championship for October at the Frickley parkrun.

Gareth Cook was first in 18-36 with Vicky Shaw the first female in 22-51.

Dave Findlay and Rob Spedding ran course PBs with 21-50 and 23-25 respectively.

Lennon Hughes was first finisher at Barnsley Parkrun with 18-00 while Joe Cox set a new overall PB of 18-15 at Penistone Parkrun.

Jenny Wakeman topped the age grading table at Wakefield Thornes Parkrun, her time of 26-02 giving her 82.78 per cent. Lesley Pickersgill ran her 50th milestone at the newly-formed East Holmes Field Parkrun in Ilkley, her time was 26-27.

Under 10 Oliver Norton knocked 55 seconds off his PB at Sandall Park Junior Parkrun, finishing fifth in 8-44.

Saturday’s parkruns saw 69 Penistone seniors compete across 25 venues.

Richard Heppenstall was first at Concord in 17-53 (83.78%), while Suzanne McGill took second female at Penistone (21-11).

Dawn Broom featured among the leaders at Nostell, Rob Lees took third overall at Yarborough, and Stephen Lavender celebrated his 150th parkrun with a strong run and first place at Wanneroo in Australia.

The week’s top age-graded performers were Julia Johnson (84.54%), Richard Heppenstall (83.78%), Ian Neville (79.31%), Rob Lees (79.25%) and Suzanne McGill (78.21%).

At Rother Valley parkrun there were PBs for Chris Fall, Rachel Jardine, Paula Mills and Stephen Burnley.

Fall is getting closer to the 20 minute mark by 32 seconds and Jardine knocked eight seconds off her PB in the exact same race but nine years apart.
