MORE than half a million journeys have been made using Barnsley’s MiCard scheme since its launch in August.
Young people are able to access free bus travel from Monday to Sunday, between 7am and 9pm, as long as the journey starts or ends in the Barnsley area and is within South Yorkshire as part of the MiCard scheme.
It was revealed this week that more than 500,000 journeys have been made using the card.
Leader of Barnsley Council Sir Steve Houghton said: “By providing free bus travel for under-18s, it’s not only helping to ease financial pressures on families but also ensuring that children and young people have access to all the opportunities our borough and South Yorkshire have to offer.
“The fact that more than two-thirds of journeys are being made in our most deprived neighbourhoods shows that this scheme is making a real difference where it’s needed most.
“We look forward to building on the success of this scheme and encourage anyone who hasn’t signed up for their Barnsley MiCard yet, to do so and enjoy the benefits of it.”
