NEW digital signage which tells town centre visitors about available parking spaces had to be hastily re-positioned after it was put up facing the wrong direction.

The high-tech display, on Dodworth Road, was designed to tell drivers heading into town about the number of free spaces in the main four car parks.

However, red-faced contractors placed it facing out of town. Drivers quickly spotted the blunder on Wednesday night and engineers were despatched on Thursday morning.

John Pickworth, managing director of Swarco, the council’s contractor, said: “As soon as this error became apparent, the install team mobilised without delay to resolve the issue without any expense to Barnsley Council.

“The sign which was not yet operational and had had been installed for less than 24 hours before this mistake was corrected is now mounted correctly, facing in the right direction. We apologise for this mishap.”
