THE Mayor of Barnsley helped save Christmas in Shafton this week as he stepped in to become Santa for the village’s festive event.

The usual Father Christmas had to cancel his duties as he was heading to Lapland with his children, but Coun Dave Leech made sure Christmas wasn’t cancelled.

He donned the suit on Tuesday night as residents gathered to support Shafton’s second Christmas celebration.

From the stirring sounds of Barnsley Brass to the joyful carols sung beneath twinkling lights, Shafton once again proved why it’s at the heart of Barnsley’s seasonal celebrations.

North East ward councillors Ruth Booker, Dorothy Coates and Ashley Peace said: “We’d like to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who joined us.

“Your warmth and enthusiasm made the evening truly special.

“As your North East ward councillors, we’re proud to support events that bring our communities together.

“We wish everyone in Shafton and across Barnsley a joyful, peaceful Christmas.”
