BARNSLEY Women’s FC reached the halfway point of their season with a 2-1 win at Notts County.
They are now third in National League Division One Midlands, four points off second-placed Boldmere St Michael’s and five away from leaders Peterborough United.
The Reds were behind at the break but Helen Lynskey netted twice early in the second half then Northampton had a player sent off.
Barnsley had seen their seven-match unbeaten run end a week earlier with a 1–0 loss at home to lowly Northampton Town. They are now due to complete their 2025 games at Worcester City on Sunday.
Manager Craige Richardson said: “Overall I’m pleased. I didn’t think it was right to go in 1-0 down.
“They took their goal well on the counter but we dominated and missed chances. We were a bit shell-shocked and I asked for a reaction.
“We’ve been working on patterns and doing things differently.
“We could have crumbled but we showed a reaction.
“Sometimes when yellow and red cards are flying about for the opposition it’s easy to get embroiled in that but we saw it out.”
Captain and goalkeeper Serena Clarke said: “We needed a reaction.
“We knew last week wasn’t good enough and we deserved to lose.
“We tweaked a few things at half-time. We probably would have got drawn into a fight last year but it shows how far we’ve come.”
Meanwhile, Barnsley Ladies lost 3-2 at home to Staveley in Division Two of the Sheffield and Hallamshire League.
It was a first defeat of the season for the leaders.
Penistone Church won 4-0 at Edenthorpe.
Emmie Leason-Hurley, Courtney Wragg, Felicity Cooke and Ava Rhodes-Smith scored.
Dearne and District drew 4-4 at Socrates. The scorers were Lily Scott, twice, Lynsay Law and Isla Laws.
Sunday fixtures: Staveley reserves v Penistone Church; West End Terriers v Wombwell Town.
