A PARCEL of land in Hoyland Common has been auctioned off for more than £40,000 - and a local councillor is hoping it will help ease antisocial behaviour woes in the area.
Auctioneers Mark Jenkinson and Co sold off the site adjacent to Hoyland Road last week for a total of £43,500.
Coun Andy Wray, who represents the Rockingham ward, is hopeful the sale will ensure behaviour around the area improves.
He told the Chronicle: “Over the last 12 to 18 months I’ve received numerous complaints about these run-down garages.
“Their concerns ranges from litter to rats and antisocial behaviour incidents.
“Hopefully the buyer will replace them with something more appropriate.
“The council has sold on a number of garage sites as it tries to get money in to balance the box but unfortunately they can only be sold once.
“What is more of a worry is the footpath that leads directly along the site.
“Even if it is not on the list of streets, the footpath has been physically built and use by the public and therefore will have acquired public highway rights under common law.
“So any proposed changes would need to be dealt with through a legal process.”
