HUNDREDS of thousands of pounds secured thanks to the creation of a new housing estate remain unspent.

Section 106 money - cash put aside by developers for loss of amenity - was ring-fenced as a result of Barratt’s estate on Halifax Road, Penistone.

A total of £400,000 was secured in September 2021 but the Chronicle can reveal that the majority of the sum has not been spent.

A council statement said: “Payment was made to the council and an initial £170,000 was used from this pot for the purchase of a piece of land near to Penistone train station.

“Our strategic transport service are currently dealing with the proposed park-and-ride scheme and the balance of sustainable travel monies which are currently sat on the Section 106 balance sheet and

are due to go towards the delivery of the scheme when they are required.

“We will endeavour to keep elected members updated on progress as this scheme develops.”
