A CALL for evidence to review outdated licensing laws that have been holding pubs, bars and local events back for far too long has been made.

Marie Tidball, MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge, backed the move as for years, pubs have struggled with complex and restrictive rules about hosting live music, serving food outdoors and staying open late, with some venues facing closure over outdated regulations.

The government is urging those with an interest in the licensing system to respond to the call for evidence, including licensed businesses and trade bodies, cultural and community organisations, residents’ advocacy groups and members of the public.

Marie said: “Supporting our local businesses and high streets and enabling them to thrive is one of my top priorities.

“Pubs and bars are central to our towns, not just as businesses, but as places where people come together to relax, connect and celebrate.

“Whether it’s enjoying a pint while listening to a local band, grabbing a bite to eat from a street food pop-up or taking part in a quiz night, these reforms could make it easier for pubs to offer the kind of experiences people love.

“I’d encourage anyone who values their local to take part in the consultation and share their views on how we can best support the hospitality sector.”
