DOZENS of parks across Barnsley’s 21 wards have been earmarked for a raft of improvement work thanks to an investment package.
An audit of parks’ conditions was carried out in mid-2025, which saw a list drawn up to identify the level of need and the improvements which could be made as part of the £2.1m scheme.
The Chronicle can reveal that a total of £1.8m of that budget has already been allocated, with orders currently being placed with suppliers and contractors ahead of work this year.
Better surfacing, new play equipment, multi-use games area upgrades, signage, seating and bins will make their way to a total of 73 parks across the borough.
Councillor James Higginbottom, cabinet spokesperson for environment and highways, said: “We want to make sure that every community in Barnsley has access to safe, welcoming and vibrant green spaces.
“Investing in our parks and green spaces is more than improving the look of our borough; it’s about supporting the health, wellbeing and quality of life of our residents.
“Our parks play a crucial role in protecting our environment by providing natural habitats for wildlife and open spaces where people can relax, socialise and exercise to help improve their wellbeing.
“I know that members and residents are excited to see these improvements delivered on the ground - it is a real demonstration of this council’s continued commitment to investing in our parks and green spaces in every part of Barnsley.”
According to the council, its parks team have undertaken surveys to highlight potential areas and will be engaging with local members.
By enhancing parks and open spaces, council bosses hope it will also help reduce antisocial behaviour by attracting more people to these spaces and fostering community ownership through activities and the use of the refurbished spaces.
A report added: “The timescale of delivering the improvement programme may be challenging due to the availability of contractors.
“However, early discussions with providers have taken place to
ensure that the work can be completed in time.
“Parks services will need to prioritise this programme of works above other work streams.
“A project board will be established to oversee the programme and ensure that appropriate financial controls are implemented to avoid any resourcing issues and that funds are allocated on an equal, fair basis.
“This investment will contribute to our Love Where You Live priority and investment programme.
“It will support the revitalisation of our local communities, bringing people together through social action and community pride while also contributing to the council’s sustainable and healthy Barnsley priorities.”
