A KENDRAY teenager is now recovering at home after breaking his leg in a mountain bike accident on New Year’s Eve.
Patrick Henstock, 14, was out riding his bike with his friends near Cudworth on December 31 when he injured himself.
His dad, Boyd, praised his friends and Woodhead Mountain Rescue who supported him with his injuries - which included a dislocated hip and a broken femur.
He told the Chronicle: “It was New Year’s Eve when I received a phone call from one of his friends saying that he’d broken his leg.
“I went from Kendray to some woods between Lundwood and Cudworth.
“I rang 999 and his friends had already done that as well.
“We asked them to get the mountain rescue team down there as well.”
The team supported Patrick through his injuries before he was airlifted to Sheffield Children’s Hospital.
A spokesperson said: “The team was called out by Yorkshire Ambulance Service to a 14-year-old lad who had suffered a serious leg injury falling from his mountain bike in woodland near Cudworth.
“Paramedics were already on scene treating the casualty’s injuries and as team members arrived we were joined by a crew from the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.
“Once the young man’s pain was under control and his injured limb had been splinted, we secured him onto our stretcher for a short carry to the waiting air ambulance.
“He was subsequently airlifted to Sheffield Children’s Hospital for further medical attention.
“We extend our best wishes to the young man for a swift and complete recovery.”
Patrick returned home following a hospital stay on Sunday - and Boyd was full of praise for the mountain rescue team and his friends.
He added: “Patrick dislocated his hip and broke his femur.
“The paramedics and mountain rescue were fantastic.
“I’ve followed the mountain rescue team for a few years.
“What they did for him was great and I want to thank them.
“We’re wanting to go to the base in Penistone to say thank you in the near future.
“His friends were great as well.
“They used What3Words so the emergency services could find him.
“And they stayed with him all the way through.”
Patrick, a keen sportsman, is hoping to be back fit and recovered in the next couple of months - and the incident certainly hasn’t put him off riding his bike.
Boyd added: “He’s an amateur boxer and he plays rugby for Dodworth.
“He just loves the outdoors.
“In June he’s going to be going to Kenya with his school to help the children there.
“He’s wanting to be fit for then.
“It’s not going to put him off.”
