TWO local MPs have backed new reforms on road safety which include lowering the drink-drive limit.
Last week, the government announced a new strategy which commits to a 65 per cent reduction in deaths and serious injuries on roads by 2035, and a 70 per cent reduction for children.
The reforms will introduce tougher measures on drink and drug driving, including a consultation on lowering the drink‑drive limit, while also mandating advanced safety technologies in new vehicles.
The strategy aims to improve driver training and testing through proposals such as a minimum learning period for learners, alongside updating speed‑limit guidance and investing in safer road design.
In addition, a new Road Safety Investigation Branch will be established to analyse collisions and help prevent future harm.
Barnsley North MP Dan Jarvis said: “Road safety for my Barnsley constituents is a top priority for me – whether you’re driving down Wakefield Road or navigating the Barugh Green crossroads, I want you to be safe.
“That’s why Labour’s new Road Safety Strategy matters.
“Action, not excuses.”
MP John Healey added: “I’m proud to welcome the government’s new Road Safety Strategy – a landmark step that reflects the values of our community.
“These reforms will save lives, protect vulnerable road users, and ensure the high standards of safety that local people expect.”
