A NEW scheme which aims to link an area of Kendray with a number of schools will make a ‘huge difference’ for kids and parents, according to a local councillor.

Consultation has now opened on the Kendray School Link Scheme which proposes to upgrade a short section of route between Cypress Road and Springwell Alternative Academy and The Forest Academy.

The council say the scheme aims to support people to walk, wheel and cycle by improving infrastructure within their neighbourhoods.

It is to be funded by central government via the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement (CRSTS) and will be delivered in partnership with the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA).

The stretch of land is already being used by locals as a shortcut to the school but many, especially during the winter months, have contacted councillors saying it is unsafe.

To combat this, a four-metre-wide surface will be added to the site, as well as new street lighting.

A new crossing and fencing is also set to be installed.

Coun Paul Murray, who represents the Stairfoot ward in which Kendray sits, told the Chronicle that the proposals are a ‘big win’ for local people.

He said: “I think that it’s a fantastic scheme.

“They’re planning to put a proper footpath in there.

“We were getting lots of residents get in touch with us to say that it was really hard to get down there.

“At this time of year especially it’s very slippy down there and it can be quite hazardous.

“This is going to make a huge difference.

“It’ll be safer for people trying to use it.”

If the plans are approved, the funding will be requested in March and construction is set to begin this summer.

Coun Murray says he’s been impressed with how quickly the scheme has gone through.

He added: “These things can usually take quite a lot of time.

“But they’ve been able to go about it really quickly.

“We contacted the council about a year ago and they’ve managed to find some funding which is great.

“It’s going to be really good for the area.”

Public consultation opened on Friday and will run until February 6.

The council are urging residents to have their say on the proposals before the deadline.

A spokesperson said: “We encourage you to give your feedback about the Kendray school link scheme proposal within the consultation period via our online survey.

“Alternatively, you can provide feedback or speak directly with the project team by emailing transportation@barnsley.gov.uk.”
