Conor Hourihane said he had mixed feelings about Barnsley’s 2-2 draw at home to Northampton on Tuesday and gave his reaction to Davis Keillor-Dunn’s departure.

The visitors took the lead early then, after David McGoldrick and Adam Phillips put them 2-1 up, the Reds conceded again late on.

Hourihane said: “They obviously got an early goal and then we couldn't get going for ten minutes or so. I thought when we found our groove for the last half an hour or so, of the first half, I thought we created loads of chances and played some good stuff.

“Scott Banks was causing trouble on our right with Corey O'Keeffe, and Reyes on the other side as well. We got a well-deserved goal from a set play which is good and then obviously we created other chances to go a couple up as well, so at half-time I felt like maybe we could have been ahead.

“I felt like the second half was a little bit carnage if I'm honest. I thought every time we attacked we tried to score rather than having control of the ball and control of the game.

“Northampton couldn't get back into their defensive structure and if we gave the ball away then they had players to transition on us and it was just kind of end-to-end and messy.

“We had loads of territory and loads of play in and around their box, but probably not loads of clear chances.

“I didn't think we had as much control as what we would like after we scored. I still thought it was a bit end-to-end and we didn't manage the game tonight as well as what we have done against Stevenage at the weekend.

“There was a lot of transitions and a lot of open spaces. And I was a little bit like: ‘I don't like what I'm watching here, it's a bit too open for my liking.’

“Overall we had 22 shots, many on target and probably did enough to win the game.”

Hourihane said he wasn’t sure if he felt it was a point gained or two points dropped.

“It's obviously one of our games in hand, so it's good to get something from it at least. Of course we want to go out and win, but I thought we did enough to definitely try and win for sure.

“It wasn't like a flat performance where we didn't create loads. It was like a real solid performance with out-and-out wingers, and Patrick Kelly was driving with the ball numerous times.

“We are probably a little bit disappointed, particularly with their first goal, because it was a poor start of the game for us as well.”

Davis Keillor-Dunn was sold to Wrexham yesterday.

Hourihane said: “We’re disappointed to lose one of your best players. He's a top player for the level and he's scored numerous goals for me in the club since he arrived from Mansfield.

“It's a fantastic opportunity for Davo and can’t begrudge him it. “He's gone to a fantastic club that are trying to get to the Premier League.

“Overall I can’t be too frustrated by it. It's a little bit frustrating because it was late in the window, of course.

“We all know what a great servant he was and we all have to move forward without him, unfortunately.”

Barnsley brought in Tom Bradshaw on deadline day but he was not available.

“It was just too late to get him registered tonight, which is frustrating. We didn't have loads of options off the bench tonight in terms of attacking to go and win the game.

“Obviously, Phillo came on and that was a sub and he scored with one of his first touches, which is positive. I would like to have had a couple more, maybe just a freshen it up in and around the top end of the pitch.

“But we didn't manage to have that. All in all, we'll move forward in a stronger position heading into Bolton with a couple of players back as well.”

Phillips and McGoldrick both continued their good scoring form in recent weeks.

“It's really important for lads to be chipping in with goals now all over the pitch.

“We've obviously had Banksy come in and I think when he finds, that little bit of extra sharpness in and around the top end of the pitch, he'll score goals as well. I thought he looked really bright tonight, really bright at the weekend.

“Obviously, Didzy has stepped up now in the last three or four games, which has been great. It's good to have people in decent form.”
