TRIBUTES have been paid to a former long-serving councillor who died last weekend.

Richard Wraith, known to many as Dick, was elected on May 6, 1976 and was in position until he retired on May 2, 2019.

He first served in the Wombwell North Ward then latterly in Wombwell following boundary changes.

He served many roles as a Labour member, including as the chair of the Regeneration Scrutiny Commission and chair of the Economic and Skills Scrutiny Commission.

Dick also worked as a lorry driver.

Council leader Sir Steve Houghton told the Chronicle: “He was one of the longest-serving councillors when he retired and he was committed to both Barnsley and his beloved Wombwell.

“What you saw with Dick is what you got - he was a straight-talking man who was respected.

“He will be sorely missed.”
