MORE than a dozen volunteers helped to clear 80 bags of litter at a picklast week.
Last Monday, a total of 17 volunteers - including the Guides, Wates, West Melton and Brampton Litter Pickers, Wombwell Womblers and Coun Kevin Osborne - joined together to clean up Edderthorpe Lane.
Around 80 bags of litter were removed and the council’s south area team also took away four full loads of fly-tipping.
Volunteers then met up on the Tuesday to clear up Storrs Mill Lane in Cudworth.
Coun Osborne said: “It was great to be able to make the most of the scheduled Edderthorpe Road closure and get a litter pick in.
“I joined Barnsley Council staff, local residents, community volunteers including Colin Ward and Denise Lumley, our brilliant Girl Guides, the Wath, West Melton and Brampton litter pickers, and volunteers from Wates.
“Huge thanks to Barnsley Council’s Andrea Walker for organising such a well-run event.
“I remember picking this same stretch back in 2021, and it’s heartbreaking to see how much litter is still being thrown from passing vehicles.
“No number of bins will fix this on its own - it’s about behaviour, respect, and education.
“Please take your rubbish home.
“Our hedgerows are not your bin.”
