A VETERAN comedian has promised a laugh-out-loud show in Barnsley - a town which ‘played a major part’ in his life.

Bernie Clifton is set to perform a show at the Penistone Paramount on Sunday at 2pm.

The long-serving comedian is best known for performing with his fuzzy puppet companion, Oswald the Ostrich.

Here, Bernie will celebrate his fast-approaching 90th birthday, which he has invited locals to share with him - with delicious cake to boot.

Bernie’s show has captured the attention of major media outlets, speaking at 11am today, for BBC Look North.

Despite not hailing from Barnsley, the town has captured his interest again and again.

He has previously performed at the Lamproom Theatre and fondly remembers his days playing shows in the area.

Bernie said: “It played a big part in my life and career and the area really means a lot to me.

“It’s all down to my life story, from growing up in St Helens and going from pubs to TV.

“It’s been a long road and I’m excited to wrap it up on the day with the show.

“The venue is perfect because of my connections in Barnsley, who said it was ideal for my show.

“I worked clubs and miners’ welfares back in the day, it’s familiar territory and is central to where I’ve spent most of my work life.

“What I like most about Barnsley is what it says about Yorkshire.

“It was a place where I could learn the trade, every village had three to four clubs.

“If they didn’t like the show, they’d definitely let me know, but it was great training.

“Barnsley played a major part in my life and career.”
