A BARNSLEY-born author is celebrating after a memoir about life in post-war Barnsley achieved Amazon best-seller status.
Author KJ Akay, 80, born Jennifer Wragg, reached the milestone with Fruits Of Victory: An Autobiography of a Childhood in Barnsley 1945-62, a vivid and often humorous account of growing up in a northern mining town during the years following the Second World War.
The memoir has ranked number 27 in Regional UK Biographies, 39 in Sociology, and 45 in Historical United Kingdom Biographies on Amazon’s bestseller lists.
Set during a period when Britain promised its people a ‘land fit for heroes’, the book recalls a childhood shaped by ration books, coal dust and strong community spirit.
The achievement marks Akay’s second Amazon bestseller of 2026, following the earlier success of her novel The Accidental Spy.
In a fitting family collaboration ahead of Mother’s Day, the book has been promoted and published by her son Ed Akay’s PR brand Midas Touch adding a personal touch to the story behind its growing readership.
She said: “To see The Fruits of Victory reach the Amazon bestseller lists has been a wonderful surprise in my eight decades.
“The book looks back at my childhood in a two-bedroom terrace on Richmond Street in Barnsley, capturing the grit, humour and strong community spirit of post-war life.
“With Mother’s Day approaching, it’s especially meaningful to share this moment knowing my son helped bring the book to the world.”
