A LOCAL councillor is urging Barnsley Council to act on road safety concerns after a pensioner died this week.
On Sunday, at 10.44am, it was reported that a red Renault Clio was involved in a collision with an 88-year-old woman on Pogmoor Road.
The woman was taken to hospital but later died.
The driver of the Renault remained at the scene and is assisting officers with enquiries.
A police spokesperson said: “We are now appealing for any witnesses to the collision, or those with relevant dash cam or CCTV footage, to come forward.
“If you can help, you can pass information to police by calling 101 or through our online portal.
“Please quote incident number 293 of March 15 when you get in touch.
“You can also report information to us anonymously via Crimestoppers where you can visit their website or call the freephone number on 0800 555 111.”
Liberal Democrat councillor Chris Wray, who represents the Dodworth ward, told the Chronicle something needs to be done in the area to keep pedestrians safe.
He added he has long called on the council to introduce measures - one of which being a safety crossing on Pogmoor Road.
He said: “This accident is the latest of many crashes and near misses around Penny Pie Park, some involving school children.
“Dangerous parking around Horizon, high speeds on blind bends and a lack of safe crossing places all contribute to this issue.
“Lib Dem councillors have repeatedly asked for measures to improve road safety in the area, including a safe crossing on Pogmoor Road, along with a plan to fund it.
“We will continue to push for investment in proactive road safety measures rather than waiting for accidents to happen.
“We are deeply sorry to hear about what’s happened and our thoughts are with the family.”
Coun James Higginbottom, cabinet spokesperson for environment and highways, said: “My thoughts are with the lady who has so tragically passed away, and with all those who knew and loved her.
“We are committed to ensuring Barnsley’s roads are as safe as they can be, and will always take a robust, data-driven approach to how we carry out road safety interventions.
“We will always take seriously any concerns in relation to road safety.
"To make further comment now, before the full circumstances of the incident have been determined, would be inappropriate, could prejudice the police investigation and cause undue distress.
"We will of course assist South Yorkshire Police with their investigations.
“Once this process has been completed, any recommendations will be investigated jointly by the road policing group of South Yorkshire Police and a member of Barnsley Council’s highways team."
