A TEENAGER who reportedly drove over twice the speed limit and went the wrong way around a roundabout in a bid to flee from officers has been arrested.

Last Wednesday, a response car was out on patrol around Cudworth in the early hours of the morning, when they noticed a van react to their presence.

The van quickly sped off from the officers, and a pursuit commenced.

The driver of the van had no regard for the speed limit, travelling up to 70mph in a 30mph limit area, as well as driving the wrong way round a roundabout, in an attempt to flee officers.

A police spokesperson said: “Remaining calm and collected, the response officers were hot on his tail and continued to feed information of their whereabouts through to the control room.

“This constant feed of information allowed an officer to set up a ‘stinger’ along their route.

“A ‘stinger’ is a stop stick and is used in pursuits such as this one to slow the fleeing vehicle down by puncturing its tyres.

“After being successful stung, the driver still tried to get away from officers by heading off road.

“Running into darkness is not match for our police dogs, and after listening to the commentary over the radio, PD Arlo and his handler quickly responded to support colleagues in finding the suspect.

“General purpose dog Arlo tracked ‘a term used when a dog follows a scent’ across the open land, before directing to his handler that there was something untoward about some bushes.

“Not fancying his changes to outrun PD Arlo, the suspect, an 18-year-old man was quickly arrested and spent the remainder of the night in our cells after being arrested on suspicion of failing to stop, dangerous driving, driving without insurance, driver while disqualified, theft of a motor vehicle, and driving while under the influence of drugs.”
