A LOCAL gaming group believes Barnsley has what it takes to secure a key funding bid.

Although LanOps is proud of their status as a long-standing community cornerstone, they are also looking firmly to the future.

If Barnsley’s Town of Culture bid for 2028 is successful, LanOps hopes to be one of the local voices shaping the programme.

Founded in 2003, the grassroots gaming group has spent more than two decades bringing people together through technology, creativity and community.

It embodies Barnsley’s values as a place of close-knit community and hopes to build a lasting digital legacy.

The group are turning their attention to future-proofing the club to benefit future generations learning, socialising and bonding over shared values.

LanOps challenges the perception that culture can only be found in formal venues or traditional art forms.

It also lives in grassroots spaces, shared interests and forward-thinking creativity.

LanOps represents that side of Barnsley that is tech-based, but people-powered, shaping local gaming culture.

Having celebrated Barnsley being named the UK’s first government-backed Tech Town, LanOps hopes to back its community in securing further vital funding.

LanOps trustee, Ashley Dawson, explained how LanOps hopes to create a ‘legacy of gaming culture’ in Barnsley.

He said: “We believe Barnsley will win the Town of Culture bid because this town has both heritage and momentum.

“Barnsley has always had people who create things, back each other and create something meaningful out of tough times.

“LanOps is part of that same tradition, just expressed through computer gaming.

“Recently, an original member returned from over 20 years ago and fit right back in.

“In my personal experience, when I was unwell and looking after my partner I felt quite isolated.

“For a while I couldn’t attend the group but when I came back it really helped with my wellbeing.

“Originally, the group was started by a 13-year-old, so we want to create something for young people too.

“If the bid is successful, we hope to get involved and bring gaming to everyone, including the creative side of games for families and young people.

“Barnsley is a town with pride in its past and belief in its future.

“We believe the town has the identity, ambition and authenticity to carry a title like this.”
