A MUCH-LOVED Barnsley theatre has been named Yorkshire’s best following a public vote.

The Academy Theatre bagged the top honour at the My Local Awards having received praise, beating other large theatres in the category such as Sheffield’s Lyceum and Bradford’s Alhambra.

Open for more than 20 years, judges described the venue, on Sheffield Road, Birdwell, as a ‘dependable night out’, known for its mix of musicals, tribute shows and dance performances that attract audiences of all ages.

The award follows a landmark year for the theatre which welcomed more than 15,000 visitors in 2025 for the first time in its history, boosted by record ticket sales for its annual Christmas pantomime, Cinderella.

Owner Julie Whitfield said: “We are absolutely delighted to have been voted by the public to win this award - it really means the world to us.

“To have received this level recognition at a regional level is incredible.

“We really appreciate that our audiences have acknowledged us a dependable night out and we are so grateful that they keep coming back for our shows.

“For a family-run business, this award is a huge testament to hard work of our amazing staff and volunteers.”
