A GROUP of residents who were left holding their noses after reports of a foul odour have had their voices heard.

The community group ‘Athersley and Carlton Stinks’ was created in response to unpleasant smell which was alleged to be coming from Glass Recycling UK’s Carlton-based site.

Created by Athersley resident Sarah Roper, the group banded together over 480 followers who shared the same mission.

After months of campaigning for change and setting up a petition with over 600 signatures for residents to vocalise their concerns - there seems to be a light at the end of the tunnel for the group.

The group has reported that the odour shrouding their community has reduced thanks to action from the glass recycling facility.

They noted that the number of seagulls around the site had also reduced, attributing the change to improved waste management schemes.

A group representative said: “It has been amazing that over the last few weeks the odour has reduced and for several day their has been no odour at all.

“Glass Recycling UK say they have processed all of the old stuff which was causing the odour and are controlling volume.
