A TEENAGE cricketer has already made waves on the sporting scene having been nominated for a Young Champions award.
Zunaira Chavan, 13, has been selected to take part in the MCC Performance Training Hubs Nets in the coming weeks.
The young cricketer is one of the highest performing players in her hub, and will attend the training hub with the chance to be selected to play against the Yorkshire Girls County Age Group Squads.
The Wombwell girl originally tried cricket before the Covid pandemic at Wombwell Main Cricket Club through the All Stars cricket programme.
Zunaira originally went up to Rockingham Cricket Ground in 2020 to use the nets after mum, Sabeena, saw a Facebook post calling for female players.
Zunaira joined the under nines side, playing at the club since then, starting to play for the women’s team this season.
As well as playing for Rockingham, she also plays for the women’s softball team at Hoylandswaine.
The sports fanatic also plays in the under-15s girls’ football team at Wombwell Main and has just finished her third season with them.
She is also a member of Barnsley Table Tennis Club and has previously represented South Yorkshire under-13s and this year the under-16s at the school individual girls’ table tennis competition, which is held in Wolverhampton.
Alongside her sporting pursuits, Zunaira enjoys participating in the park run at Locke Park on Sundays sharing her passion with youngsters who take part in the junior park run.
Zunaira also volunteers for the Friends of Wombwell Park, providing a helping hand at their community events.
Zunaira’s mum, Sabeena, said: “There are not enough words to describe how proud as parents we are of Zunaira.
“When she was at primary school, Zunaira was a very shy girl who lacked confidence.
“However, she has worked hard to build on this.
“Every achievement no matter how big or small, we are always there to congratulate her or to comfort her when the result has not been in her favour.
“I am so proud of all my children and I feel so blessed to be able to say Zunaira is my daughter.”
