A RESILIENT team of young footballers who played through every challenge have been nominated for a Young Champions award.
The Hoyland Town Junior Football Club’s under-eights team consists of ten youngsters who compete under the Sheffield and District Junior Sunday League and play across South Yorkshire.
Led by coach Mike Wright, who aims to develop the team’s character as not only players but people, the side have proven that football is about more than results, it’s about heart.
As a relatively new squad competing against well-established teams, the youngsters have refused to give up in the face of adversity, having not yet recorded a win all season.
Most youngsters would find this demoralising and even be tempted to quit, but the story is different for the Hoyland lads.
Week after week, the team show up with smiles, determination and an unshakeable love to the game.
The young team play each match with the same admirable energy and enthusiasm, proving that their commitment to the sport is not defined by the outcome or league position.
From the first whistle to the last, the boys support each other, celebrating small victories like great passes, skilful strikes and well-timed tackles.
Through their steadfast commitment, they’ve learned that football is about lifting each other up, not just lifting trophies.
Rain or shine, win, lose or draw, the team arrive at training and matches ready to learn and improve.
Their encouragement and sportsmanship have inspired not only each other, but also parents, coaches, officials and even opposing teams.
This season has taught HTJFC unwavering resilience, respect and the value of teamwork and togetherness - lessons that will serve them for life.
They’ve shown that success is measured in friendships made, skills developed, and challenges overcome.
The team’s coach, Mike Wright, said: “The kids have worked so hard this year and grown together as a team on and off the pitch.
“They have formed friendships and learnt life skills that will help them in the future.
“I genuinely love coaching them and seeing the smiles on their faces when they do something well, whilst trying to help them to develop to their potential.
“To these kids, winning isn’t everything - it’s about having fun and learning new skills.
“I am so proud of each and everyone of them and honoured to be their coach.”
