MEMBERS of Age UK’s Men in Sheds group have taken part in a creative project celebrating the history, identity and changing landscape of Barnsley town centre.
The group were invited by Barnsley Civic to take part in the SkyLine Project, an initiative bringing together local residents and artists to explore Barnsley’s past and present through conversation and practical creativity.
Across six sessions, members worked alongside local artists to share memories, stories and perspectives about Barnsley.
Through photography, collage, discussion and woodworking at The Hut, the group reflected on how the town centre has changed over time and what makes people feel connected to the area.
The project will be exhibited at Barnsley Civic as part of The Sum Of Our Parts while May 30.
A spokesperson said: “As part of the project, the Men in Sheds members and artists designed and built a unique interactive balance board and shelving display to showcase their final work.
“The wooden installation features a collection of handcrafted 2D and 3D buildings representing well-known Barnsley landmarks, including the iconic bandstand in Locke Park.
“The finished piece invites people to create their own version of Barnsley’s skyline by arranging wooden buildings, benches and trees across the balance board - highlighting how the town continues to evolve through the people who live and work there.
“It’s also sparked conversations among the group about their experiences of the town today, including how public transport, accessibility and town centre developments such as the Glass Works have shaped their connection to the area.”
