A HISTORIC chapel’s congregation are reviving a treasured artefact last seen in the 1990s with members of the public being encouraged to pay a visit.
Bullhouse Chapel is steeped in rich local history, with perhaps the most intriguing bit being a Sunday school banner dating back to the early 20th century.
The historic banner is based on the original from 1905, was commissioned in 1949 for £63, 15 shillings and 16 pence.
In the 1950s, the artefact paraded proudly through the streets by members of the chapel’s congregation and the Thurlstone Brass Band.
Last seen in 1992 due to its delicate nature, the chapel’s congregation have unfurled the banner for the first time in 35 years - in celebration of Pentecost Sunday.
Chapel treasurer, Suzanne Williams, told the Chronicle about the importance of keeping the place of worship’s traditions and history alive.
She said: “We meet every Sunday for worship, which we want to keep going as long as possible.
“During the Covid pandemic we lost a few elderly members, mainly due to accessibility as we are tucked away.
“Over the years our numbers have diminished, but those who do come in are interested in keeping the chapel’s worship and history alive.”
